衣 yī clothes
How it came to be
A robe seen from the front: the collar crossed over at the neck, and the two flaps of it hanging down either side. The neck opening is the part that survives at the top today.
How it is used
- 'Clothing' - bound; everyday it's 衣服 (yīfú) clothes.
- Specific garments use it as a suffix: 大衣 (dàyī) overcoat, 毛衣 (máoyī) sweater, 雨衣 (yǔyī) raincoat. 衣食住行 (yī-shí-zhù-xíng) = the basics of daily life.
