艾 ài mugwort

源How it came to be

Grass, with the shears block under it for the sound. No old form of this shape exists. It names one plant, burned on the skin to heal, so it also means to cure.

用How it is used

• The herb mugwort - 艾草 (àicǎo) mugwort, 艾灸 (àijiǔ) moxibustion (burning mugwort in Chinese medicine).
• Also a transliteration syllable: 艾滋病 (àizībìng) AIDS, and many foreign names. Idiom 方兴未艾 (fāngxīng-wèi'ài) flourishing and far from over.
