良 liáng good

good; virtuous; respectable

  • HSK 5
  • 7 strokes

How it came to be

A chamber with an opening at the top and another at the bottom, the grain running in one end and out the other. What falls through is clean, the chaff left behind: good grain.

How it is used

  • 良 is a bound, formal-register word for 'good,' used mostly in set two-character compounds rather than describing things directly the way 好 hǎo does.
  • 良好 liánghǎo is the go-to formal word for 'good/fine' in reports and official contexts (良好的关系 liánghǎo de guānxi - a good relationship) - 好 would sound too casual in the same slot.
  • 不良 bùliáng means 'bad/harmful,' especially in fixed phrases like 不良反应 (bùliáng fǎnyìng) side effects, or 不良习惯 bad habits - stronger and more clinical than plain 不好.
  • 善良 shànliáng describes a person's character (kind-hearted), while 良心 liángxīn is the noun 'conscience.'
