How it came to be

A cut of meat with the grain drawn as two strokes across it. Those two strokes are what tell it from the moon, which it is written exactly like on the left of a character.

How it is used

  • Meat/flesh: 牛肉 (niúròu) beef, 猪肉 (zhūròu) pork - animal + 肉 names the meat.
  • Also flesh on a body - 肌肉 (jīròu) muscle, 皮肉 (píròu) skin and flesh.
  • Colloquially 肉 can mean 'soft/mushy' or a slow person, and 肉 is the flesh of fruit too: 果肉 (guǒròu) fruit pulp.
