羽 yǔ feather
How it came to be
Two feathers side by side with the barbs marked down each quill. It is a pair because one feather alone would have been taken for a stroke: the doubling makes it readable.
How it is used
- Feather / plume, a bound morpheme - 羽毛 (yǔmáo) feather.
- Practically, learners meet it in 羽毛球 (yǔmáoqiú) badminton and 羽绒服 (yǔróngfú) a down jacket (down-filled winter coat).
- 羽绒 (yǔróng) specifically = the soft down used as filling, not outer feathers.
