How it is used

  • To open the eyes - 睁开眼睛 (zhēngkāi yǎnjing) to open one's eyes, 睁不开眼 can't keep one's eyes open.
  • Opposite of 闭 (bì, to close the eyes): 睁一只眼闭一只眼 (zhēng yì zhī yǎn bì yì zhī yǎn) = to turn a blind eye, to let something slide.
  • 睁眼说瞎话 (zhēngyǎn shuō xiāhuà) = to lie with one's eyes wide open (barefaced lying).
  • Specific to eyes; you can't 睁 anything else.
