益 yì to profit
to profit; to benefit
How it came to be
Water lying across the top of a dish, spilling over the rim. The picture is more than the vessel will hold, and the extra is the profit.
How it is used
- Bound, fairly formal morpheme for "benefit/gain" - written register, rarely used as a standalone verb in speech.
- 利益 (lìyì) "interests/benefits" and 有益 (yǒuyì) "beneficial" are the two most common compounds.
- 日益 (rìyì) works as an adverb before a verb meaning "increasingly, day by day": 日益增长 (rìyì zēngzhǎng) "growing day by day".
- 受益/得益 (shòuyì/déyì) both mean "to benefit from", used with 于 or 于此: 受益于这个政策 "benefit from this policy".
