狂 kuáng insane
insane; mad; wild
How it came to be
A dog with the king block beside it for the sound. Everybody had seen a dog go mad, and the word for madness in people comes from that.
How it is used
- Describes wild, unrestrained intensity - of behavior, weather, or emotion - rather than clinical madness: 疯狂 fēngkuáng (crazy/frantic) is the everyday word for over-the-top or reckless behavior.
- 狂欢 kuánghuān (to revel/party wildly) and 狂热 kuángrè (fanatical, zealous) describe intense collective excitement or obsession.
- Very productive as a suffix meaning "-holic/fanatic": 购物狂 gòuwùkuáng (shopaholic), 工作狂 gōngzuòkuáng (workaholic) - a pattern learners can reuse freely.
