毛 máo hair

源How it came to be

A tuft of hair or a feather, the strands curling over at the tip and the stem running down through them. It is any growth off a skin: hair, fur, down.

用How it is used

• "Hair/fur/feather" (on body or animals, not head hair - that's 头发 tóufa): 眉毛 (méimao) eyebrow, 羽毛 (yǔmáo) feather, 毛衣 (máoyī) wool sweater.
• Colloquial for a dime, 1/10 yuan: 三毛钱 (sān máo qián) 30 cents (written 角 jiǎo formally).
• 毛病 (máobìng) = a fault/defect or a (health) problem: 车有毛病 (chē yǒu máobìng) something's wrong with the car.
