柬 jiǎn card
card; letter; invitation; note
How it came to be
A tied bundle with marks set inside it: going through what is tied up and picking out the pieces worth keeping.
How it is used
- A card or written invitation - 请柬 (qǐngjiǎn), a formal invitation card for a wedding or banquet.
- Also transliterates 柬埔寨 (Jiǎnpǔzhài) Cambodia. Otherwise rare; for a casual invite people say 请帖 (qǐngtiě) too.
