戒 jiè to warn

How it came to be
Two hands holding a pole weapon up and across the body. It is the guard position rather than the strike: on guard, a warning to anyone who comes closer.
How it is used
- To give up/guard against - 戒烟 (jiè yān) quit smoking, 戒酒 (jiè jiǔ) quit drinking, 戒备 (jièbèi) be on guard, 警戒 (jǐngjiè) be vigilant/on alert.
- Also 'a ring': 戒指 (jièzhi) finger ring. In Buddhism 戒律 (jièlǜ) = precepts/discipline. Core idea: to abstain from or guard against.
