How it came to be
A bag hung from a frame with drops falling out of the bottom: water being pressed out. The sense of carving and setting down came from a different word that took the same shape.
How it is used
- 录 is the verb root for recording: 录音 (lùyīn) record audio, 录像 (lùxiàng) record video, 录制 (lùzhì) record/produce (a show).
- 帮我录一下这段视频 (bāng wǒ lù yíxià zhè duàn shìpín) - record this video clip for me.
- 记录 (jìlù) means to write down/log, and also doubles as the noun "a record", including a world record (打破记录 dǎpò jìlù - break a record).
- 录取 (lùqǔ) is a distinct, very important sense: to be admitted by a school or accepted for a job - 我被大学录取了 (wǒ bèi dàxué lùqǔ le) - I was admitted to the university.
