How it came to be
A person standing on a raised walk drawn stretching away. It is the swept yard in front of a hall where officials waited to be called, and the standing about is drawn into it.
How it is used
- The imperial court: 宫廷 (gōngtíng) the palace court, 朝廷 (cháotíng) the imperial court/government.
- Bound; refers to the seat of royal power. Distinguish from 庭 (tíng, courtyard/law court).
