How it came to be
Three lines running down the page, the outer two straighter than the one in the middle: banks either side and the current between them. The bend in the middle stroke is the water.
How it is used
- A river/plain: 山川 (shānchuān) mountains and rivers, 河川 (héchuān) rivers, 平川 (píngchuān) flat open land.
- 川流不息 (chuānliú-bùxī) = flowing on without pause, of ceaseless traffic or crowds.
- Abbreviation for Sichuan: 川菜 (chuāncài) Sichuan cuisine.
