How it came to be
Three peaks on a ridge line, the middle one tallest. It is the plainest picture in the script and it has not changed shape in three thousand years.
How it is used
- Mountain/hill, counted with 座 - 一座山 (yí zuò shān) a mountain; the classic activity is 爬山 (pá shān) go hiking.
- Rich in fixed compounds: 火山 (huǒshān) volcano, 雪山 (xuěshān) snow peak, 山顶 (shāndǐng) summit.
- 人山人海 (rénshān-rénhǎi) literally 'people-mountain people-sea' = a huge dense crowd - a set idiom, not literal mountains.
