How it came to be
A kneeling figure with the arms folded across the body, drawn from the side. The kneeling pose stands for the low social status women had in the past.
How it is used
- 'Female / woman' - 女人 (nǚrén) woman, 女性 (nǚxìng) female, and as a modifier 女朋友 (nǚpéngyou) girlfriend, 女生 (nǚshēng) female student.
- Also 'daughter': 女儿 (nǚ'ér) daughter, 孙女 (sūnnǚ) granddaughter.
- 女士 (nǚshì) 'Ms./lady' is the formal address, as in 女士们先生们 ladies and gentlemen.
