How it came to be
A hand at the top holds a cord running down to a person's head: a captive on a leash. It was borrowed for the question word, and the rope was left behind.
How it is used
- Bound and archaic; in modern Mandarin essentially only 奚落 (xīluò) - to taunt/mock someone with cutting words.
- 被人奚落 (bèi rén xīluò) = to be jeered at. Classically also a question word 'why/what'.
