夏 xià summer
How it came to be
A figure with an oversized head, the arms out and the feet turned: a dancer in a mask at a seasonal rite. It named the people who held those rites, and only later the season.
How it is used
- Summer - 夏天 (xiàtiān) or 夏季 (xiàjì) summer; 盛夏 (shèngxià) the height of summer.
- Collocations: 夏令营 (xiàlìngyíng) summer camp, 夏装 (xiàzhuāng) summer clothing.
- Also the name of China's first dynasty 夏 and a term for China itself (华夏 Huáxià) - but the season is the everyday meaning.
