How it came to be

An opening in a wall or roof with a lattice drawn across it, to let smoke out and keep animals from getting in. The bars are the whole difference between this and a plain hole.

How it is used

  • Appears only in 烟囱 (yāncōng) - a chimney/smokestack. 工厂的烟囱 (gōngchǎng de yāncōng) the factory chimney.
  • Don't confuse the character with 窗 (chuāng, window).
