How it is used

  • Means "to make a sound / ring / be loud": 电话响了 (diànhuà xiǎng le) the phone rang. Can be a verb or adjective (响亮 xiǎngliàng loud and clear).
  • By far its most common compound is 影响 (yǐngxiǎng) = influence/effect (both noun and verb): 影响很大 (yǐngxiǎng hěn dà) a big impact. Don't confuse the two 响-words.
  • 音响 (yīnxiǎng) = stereo/sound system; 响应 (xiǎngyìng) = to respond to (a call, appeal).
