How it is used

  • To roar/bellow - of animals, engines, or an angry person - 狮子吼 (shīzi hǒu) a lion's roar, 大吼一声 (dà hǒu yì shēng) to give a great shout.
  • Louder and more aggressive than 喊 (hǎn, to shout/call out); 吼 conveys rage or ferocity.
  • 北风怒吼 (běifēng nùhǒu) = the north wind howls.
