冗 rǒng excessive
excessive; superfluous
How it came to be
A figure sitting under a cover, with nothing to do. Somebody indoors and idle is more than the work needs, so the word came to mean more than is needed.
How it is used
- Redundant, superfluous, needlessly long - 冗长 (rǒngcháng) tediously long-winded, 冗余 (rǒngyú) redundancy, 冗员 (rǒngyuán) surplus staff.
- Always a criticism: too much padding - a 冗长 speech or report drags.
- Written register; useful for editing and tech (数据冗余 data redundancy).
