How it came to be
A roof set on a single post with a platform under it: a shelter put up quickly by the road. Borrowed for the word I; the left over sense came later from another character.
How it is used
- Bound character "surplus, remaining": 剩余 (shèngyú, leftover), 其余 (qíyú, "the rest" - refers to remaining items in a set, e.g. 其余的人 qíyú de rén, the rest of the people).
- 业余 (yèyú) means "spare time/amateur": 业余时间 (yèyú shíjiān, free time), 业余爱好者 (yèyú àihàozhě, amateur enthusiast).
- Attached after a round number it means "-odd, more than": 十余人 (shí yú rén, more than ten people) - a literary alternative to spoken 多.
