How it came to be
A cloud curling under the line of the sky: the flat stroke is the air above, the hook beneath it is the cloud rolling over.
How it is used
- 'Cloud' - 天上有云 (tiān shàng yǒu yún) there are clouds in the sky; 乌云 (wūyún) dark clouds.
- In classical/literary Chinese 云 also means 'to say' (人云亦云 rén yún yì yún, to parrot what others say).
- 风云 (fēngyún) 'wind and clouds' figuratively means a turbulent, changing situation.
