- To explain how something works or to indicate/show - 说明使用方法 (shuōmíng shǐyòng fāngfǎ) explain how to use it; 这说明他很在乎 (zhè shuōmíng tā hěn zàihu) this shows he cares.
- Also a noun 'directions/instructions': 产品说明 (chǎnpǐn shuōmíng) product instructions; 说明书 (shuōmíngshū) manual.
- Contrast 解释 (jiěshì, to explain a reason or defend): 说明 is expository (illustrate/demonstrate), 解释 clears up confusion or excuses.
