- An exam, and 'to take/give an exam': 明天考试 (míngtiān kǎoshì) there's an exam tomorrow; 参加考试 (cānjiā kǎoshì) sit an exam.
- It's a verb-object compound, so 'take two exams' splits it: 考了两次试 (kǎole liǎng cì shì).
- 考 alone as a verb means to test: 考数学 (kǎo shùxué) be tested on math; 考试 is the event/noun.
