- The place/location where something is - often abstract: 问题的所在 (wèntí de suǒzài) where the problem lies; 症结所在 (zhèngjié suǒzài) the crux of the matter.
- As a suffix-noun it points to 'the very place/point of X', common with 关键 (guānjiàn, key), 原因 (yuányīn, reason), 价值 (jiàzhí, value).
- More abstract/formal than plain 地方 (dìfang, place).
