- Two senses. In writing, 'see / cf.' - a cross-reference: 参见第五章 (cānjiàn dì-wǔ zhāng) see Chapter 5.
- In classical/formal usage, 'to pay one's respects to (a superior)': 参见大人. The 'see also' reference sense is the one you meet most in modern texts.
