- A formal function word placed before a two-syllable verb to apply that action to a previously mentioned object - 对问题加以分析 (duì wèntí jiāyǐ fēnxī) analyze the problem, 加以改进 (jiāyǐ gǎijìn) improve it.
- The real object comes earlier (often marked by 对/将); 加以 + verb then does the action, adding a formal, deliberate tone.
- Written/官方 register; roughly 'proceed to (verb) it'. Do not follow it with a monosyllabic or intransitive verb.
