- Abstract, formal word for things in the sense of phenomena or matters, not physical objects: 新事物 (new things/phenomena), 客观事物 (objective reality).
- Contrast with 东西 (dōngxi), the everyday word for a concrete physical thing - you would never use 事物 for a cup or a chair on your desk.
