- Two linked senses: (noun) one's academic major/specialty - 我的专业是历史 (wǒ de zhuānyè shì lìshǐ) my major is history; (adj) professional - 很专业 (hěn zhuānyè) very professional.
- As 'major' it's the field of study; contrast 职业 (zhíyè) which is one's occupation/job.
- 专门 (zhuānmén) means 'specially/specialized (for a purpose)' - don't confuse it with 专业 the field or the quality of professionalism.
