  • Modern use is almost entirely 必须 (bìxū) = must / have to: 必须去 (bìxū qù) have to go; also 无须/无需 (wúxū) = no need to.
  • 须知 (xūzhī) = 'points to note / essential information' - a heading on notices and instructions.
  • The original sense 'beard/whiskers' (胡须 húxū) survives but is separate from the 'must' usage learners meet first.
