How it came to be
A basket, or a bird settling into its nest at sundown; the old dictionary reads the second. Borrowed for the direction the sun goes down in, and kept.
用法
- The direction west - 西方 (xīfāng) the West, 西北 (xīběi) northwest, 西部 (xībù) the western part.
- Often marks Western/foreign things: 西装 (xīzhuāng) a (Western) suit, 西医 (xīyī) Western medicine.
- In 东西 (dōngxi) 'thing', 西 is toneless and the pair no longer means directions; also names foods like 西瓜 (xīguā) watermelon, 西红柿 (xīhóngshì) tomato.
