舍 shě house

house; dwelling

  • HSK 5 级
  • 8 画

How it came to be

A roof drawn over a post and a base: the smallest building the script bothers to draw, a shelter with one support in it. It is where people stop for the night rather than live.

用法

  • 舍 has two readings: shě 'to give up/abandon' (the one here) and shè 'dwelling,' as in 宿舍 sùshè (dormitory).
  • 舍不得 shěbude is extremely common in speech - 'can't bear to part with/do something': 舍不得花钱 (shěbude huā qián) - reluctant to spend money; its opposite 舍得 shěde means 'willing to part with.', 舍得花钱 (shěde huā qián) willing to spend money.
  • 依依不舍 yīyī-bùshě and 恋恋不舍 liànliàn-bùshě are near-synonymous set phrases for being reluctant to leave/say goodbye, both slightly literary.
  • 锲而不舍 qiè'érbùshě (to persevere without giving up, literally 'carve without stopping') is a bookish idiom used to praise persistence.
