源How it came to be

Not an old man and not a sun. The oldest form is cane over a fire, or beans in a pot, nobody is sure, and the modern shape is what that cooked down to.

用用法

• Suffix turning a verb/role into "the one who": 作者 (zuòzhě) author, 记者 (jìzhě) reporter, 读者 (dúzhě) reader, 消费者 (xiāofèizhě) consumer. Written register.
• 或者 (huòzhě) = "or" in statements - distinct from 还是 (háishi), which is "or" in questions. 咖啡或者茶 (kāfēi huòzhě chá) coffee or tea.
• 前者/后者 (qiánzhě/hòuzhě) = the former/the latter, a formal-writing pairing.
