- Note: 烫 = hot to the touch (scalding); 热 = hot in general/warm. Coffee that's 烫 will burn you.
- To iron or perm: 烫衣服 (tàng yīfu) to iron clothes, 烫头发 (tàng tóufa) to perm hair.
- 烫手山芋 (tàngshǒu shānyù) = a hot potato (a troublesome thing no one wants).
