How it came to be
A river with a dot dropped into each of its three channels: islands in the stream. Land with water round it was the first thing anybody called a district.
用法
- An administrative region - historically a prefecture, today mostly frozen in place names: 广州 (Guǎngzhōu), 杭州 (Hángzhōu), 苏州 (Sūzhōu).
- Also renders foreign 'state': 加州 (Jiāzhōu) California, 得州 (Dézhōu) Texas, and 自治州 (zìzhìzhōu) autonomous prefecture. Not a productive common noun today.
