- To slaughter (an animal), and by extension to govern or to fleece: 宰鸡 (zǎi jī) kill a chicken, 主宰 (zhǔzǎi) to dominate/master.
- Colloquial 挨宰 (ái zǎi) = to get ripped off / overcharged: 被宰了一顿 (bèi zǎile yí dùn) got fleeced.
