夸 kuā extravagant
extravagant; luxurious; to exaggerate; to praise
How it came to be
A person standing over the 'to lose' block, breath going out and bending. Somebody full of air, talking themselves up, with the breath drawn coming out beneath them.
用法
- To praise or to overstate - 夸奖 (kuājiǎng) / 夸 (kuā) to praise: 老师夸我 (lǎoshī kuā wǒ) the teacher praised me.
- Also 'to exaggerate': 夸张 (kuāzhāng) exaggerate/exaggerated, 夸大 (kuādà) overstate.
- Note the two flavors coexist: 夸 alone usually = compliment, but 夸夸其谈 (kuākuā-qítán) = to talk big/boastfully.
