- Mute, or a voice gone hoarse/silent - 哑巴 (yǎba) a mute person, 沙哑 (shāyǎ) hoarse, 嗓子哑了 (sǎngzi yǎ le) my voice has gone.
- 哑 = no sound where sound is expected: a 哑铃 (yǎlíng) dumbbell is a 'mute bell', 哑火 (yǎhuǒ) a gun that fails to fire.
- 哑口无言 (yǎkǒu-wúyán) = struck dumb, unable to reply.
