How it came to be
A cloth hanging under a hook, which is what the word means: to hang. The old form showed a mourner with a cord, and the cloth took its place.
用法
- Everyday verb 'to hang, suspend' - 吊灯 (diàodēng) hanging lamp, 把它吊起来 (bǎ tā diào qǐlai) hang it up.
- Also 'to revoke': 吊销执照 (diàoxiāo zhízhào) revoke a license.
- In 提心吊胆 (tíxīn-diàodǎn) it means on tenterhooks, heart-in-mouth anxious.
