How it came to be
The full form is two feet braced, a bow, and a hand with a stick: an archer letting fly. Simplified to five strokes, and the hair character was folded onto the same shape.
用法
- Read fā it means to send out, give off, or happen - 发生 (fāshēng) occur, 出发 (chūfā) set off, 发现 (fāxiàn) discover, 发烧 (fāshāo) run a fever.
- Read fà it means hair - 头发 (tóufa) hair, 理发 (lǐfà) haircut.
- fā is the workhorse for 'issue/develop': 发展 (fāzhǎn) develop, 发消息 (fā xiāoxi) send a message.
- Trap: 头发 is tóu-FA and 理发 is lǐ-FÀ - the 'hair' meaning is the only place 发 turns 4th tone. Note 沙发 (shāfā) sofa is just a sound loan.
