How it came to be
The full form is two short-tailed birds held in one hand. Two of a thing caught together: a pair rather than a count, which is why it is the word for both of anything.
用法
- Measure word for natural pairs - 一双鞋 (yì shuāng xié) a pair of shoes, 一双筷子 (yì shuāng kuàizi) chopsticks, 一双手.
- 双 = a matched pair; contrast 对 (duì) which pairs complementary items (一对夫妻 a couple). Some overlap, but body parts and shoes take 双.
