入 rù enter
enter; to join; to go into
How it came to be
A wedge, point down, going into something. It is the person block the other way up, which is exactly how the two are told apart, and why they are so easy to confuse.
用法
- The literary/bound verb for 'enter, go into' - 请入座 (qǐng rùzuò) please take your seat. In everyday speech the free verb is 进 (jìn): you say 进来 (jìnlái) come in, not 入来.
- Very productive in compounds meaning 'into': 加入 (jiārù) join, 投入 (tóurù) put/pour into, 收入 (shōurù) income (money that 'comes in'), 深入 (shēnrù) go deep into.
- Note 入口 (rùkǒu) entrance vs 出口 (chūkǒu) exit - here 入 is the fixed opposite of 出.
